Are you feeding your pet grain free food? If you are, you should think twice about it. Grain free food has been the topic of discussion in the veterinary field for some time, and here is why. The FDA has and is currently investigating a link between a grain free diet and a heart condition, Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM is a heart condition where the heart is enlarged and eventually leads to congestive heart failure. This is usually found in larger breeds of dogs, such as Dobermans, Irish Wolfhounds, Great Danes and many more. It has been found that a wide range of dog breeds, Shih Tzus, Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers and more, who have been fed a grain free diet have been found to have DCM. The FDA is unsure about how quickly feeding this diet leads to DCM, some were only fed for months, others had been fed for years. The FDA is still investigating what exactly about the grain free foods do to cause DCM, but they believe that the two are linked. Some great dog food brands we recommend who have nutritionists on site, run food trials, and are high quality, affordable products are Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Purina Proplan, and Hills Science Diet.
